James Voûte is an Australian Artist and Author of Benny’s Quest for the Tasmanian Tiger.
James was born on May 1939 in Medan, Indonesia from Dutch and English parents. He moved to The Netherlands with his family as a young boy and migrated to Australia in 1966. He has spent 7 years in Papua New Guinea and spent 6 years in Arnhem Land and outback NT.
James became an Australian citizen in 1983; completed Bachelor of Fine Art(Painting) from Curtin University in 1985; moved to Tasmania in 1986, completed Master of Fine Art(Painting) from University of Tasmania in 1988.
He worked as art tutor at UTas and Tafe (Risdon Prison) plus a private art school. He became a Fern Tree resident from 1990. He has held various exhibitions of paintings and began writing stories from 1998. Now illustrating and writing his own stories for children which describe the characteristics of Tasmanian creatures.
His first book published by Forty South in December 2020 titled “Bennys Quest for the Tasmanian Tiger”, can be found here!

James first book was published by Forty South in December 2020 titled Benny’s Quest for the Tasmanian Tiger. He has two further stories in the pipeline based on the unique wildlife of Tasmania. Both illustrated by James.
The blue hazy hills with the sunlight glinting on the distant waters of Storm Bay nestled on the foothills of Kunanyi inspired James to capture the unique characters inhabiting Tasmania’s bush.
The story of Benny, a Bennett’s wallaby, highlights the mysteries of animal habitats, their connections with each other despite the feathers beaks fur and claws, and their stories.
Benny was on a discovery mission to find out about the Tasmanian tiger. Is the tiger extinct or still alive?
What happens when Sandgroper meets his penfriend Squirrel from the British Isles?
From that moment, everything goes wrong when Squirrel and Sandgroper start their adventures along the beaches of the Indian Ocean.
Follow Sandgroper and Squirrel as they make their way on a most unexpected journey. It’s a chaos of misunderstandings and adventures — not to mention meeting some unforgettable animals of the Outback.
